Lucas, 25, was taken off just five minutes into Liverpool's 2-2 draw with Manchester City on Sunday, and scans have confirmed a torn thigh muscle.
Rodgers confirmed on Wednesday that the player is now expected to be sidelined for "two to three months", as he again begins a lengthy road to recovery.
The news comes just weeks after Lucas made his return to action from a cruciate knee ligament injury, one which had sidelined him since December 2011.
Taking to Twitter to express his frustration Lucas wrote: "No words to describe my feelings at the moment. It is (sic) been hard to be positive but I am sure better days will come. YNWA."
Liverpool will now decide whether or not Lucas' injury requires an operation. Rodgers said: "I had a good long chat with Lucas today. He went for his scan and then he got the news last night. He's obviously disappointed because he's worked so hard.
"But this will be an opportunity for him to work on other areas. He can continue to work to improve the strength in his knee. He can still do some work off the field as well. It gives him an opportunity to focus and get back stronger.
"We're hoping the diagnosis of two to three months is a maximum. If we can get him back before that, then great. Sure, at this moment, he's disappointed. But he's a very courageous guy and very focused, so his aim now is to get back as quickly as he possibly can."
The Reds will take solace in having secured the season-long loan signing of Nuri Sahin from Real Madrid, with the Turkey international sure to provide cover in Lucas' absence.
