Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said Andy Carroll's loan move to West Ham was dictated by finance rather than the striker's ability to fit into the way he wants his team to play.

Rodgers is attempting to secure late deadline day deals to bring in Clint Dempsey and Daniel Sturridge after freeing up some of his budget by allowing Carroll to move to the East Londoners for the season.

It is understood the Hammers agreed to meet the England striker's £80,000-a-week wages for the season as well as paying Liverpool a £1 million loan fee.

A move for Fulham forward Dempsey remained a possibility on Friday after he rejected the chance to join Aston Villa. Striker Sturridge is out of favour at Chelsea, and Rodgers would like to bring him in on loan.

The Liverpool manager has ruled out a move for Schalke's Netherlands forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar but has not given up hope of tempting Theo Walcott to Anfield, even though the England international has indicated that he wants to stay at Arsenal.

Asked about Carroll's departure, Rodgers said: "It's probably 99.9% finance. If we've got a choice, then he's someone around the place who you could use from time to time. He would have been a good option.

"It's one where finances dictate things. I don't think it's so much the style. I think the big guy gets an unfair deal on that one. He's a good technical player.

"He has his strengths. Of course, his strengths are attacking the ball in the box and being aggressive in the air. Of course, some styles will suit that better than others. But there's certainly no doubt he could play. Whether he was going to play as much as he would like, that was the issue."

Rodgers was cagey when asked about Dempsey, saying: "We have to wait and see. There are a number of players we are enquiring about." On Walcott, he said: "He's an Arsenal player - a very good Arsenal player."

His response when asked about Huntelaar was: "No. Definitely no," but he hinted at a strong interest in bringing Sturridge to the club, saying: "Daniel's a young player I know well - he's done very, very well for Chelsea. At the minute, there are a number of contacts we're making.

"Out of respect for the other clubs and their players, I'm not going to sit and go through every single name that's been linked with Liverpool. There will be one or two coming in, we hope, to support the group."
