Liverpool's Martin Kelly does not expect to play again this year after twisting his knee against Manchester United on Sunday, while there are also worries about Daniel Agger and Fabio Borini, who were also forced off.

Scans on Monday revealed that Kelly, 22, has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture of his right knee and he will now require anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

The England international had to leave the field late in the contest, which was won 2-1 by United. His absence contributed to Liverpool finishing the game with nine men after Jonjo Shelvey's earlier red card.

Kelly is remaining upbeat despite the fact he knows he has played his last game of the calendar year.

"Hoping for the best but fearing the worst, got my scan at eight, then will let you guys know," he tweeted. "What I can say is it's not the worst injury I've had, and for sure I'll be fighting for my place next year when I'm back fitter and stronger."

Meanwhile, Agger, who was stretchered off the pitch 13 minutes before Kelly limped off, has suffered a significant bone bruise to his left knee.

No ligament damage was sustained but further tests are to be be carried out before it can be established when the Denmark international will be able to return to training.

Borini, 21, has considerable swelling to the inner aspect of his right ankle, although no fracture was detected in an X-ray.

The Italy international will undergo an MRI scan on Tuesday, after the swelling is reduced, to assess any soft tissue damage and determine when he will be able to return to action.
