Liverpool failed in their bid to sign long-time target Clint Dempsey from Fulham on transfer deadline day after not being able to agree a fee with the club.

Liverpool faced early competition from Aston Villa, who had a £7 million bid accepted for the Cottagers forward, but Dempsey eventually moved to Tottenham.
